EX VOTO project: What sort of art is not an EX VOTO

The EX VOTO is a materialisation of gratitude and acknowledgment. It refers to triumph over death, suffering, overcoming afflictive and desperate situations or an improvement in one’s quality of life. With the EX VOTO a past event is invoked. Names and signs are written to identify the Divine entity to which the acknowledgment is made, the name of the person who received the Grace, who gave it to the divinity and more rarely the name of the author. The EX VOTO is made in one self’s name or in the name of the family, keen, dear ones or whoever you depend upon. There are Promises in behalf of daughters and sons, slaves (18th century) but also animals. (Animals = those who have anima (soul)) EX VOTOS aren’t exclusive of European cultures, nor of the Judaic-Christian based religions. They can’t be restricted to simple and clumsy manifestations of the so called “popular culture”, a term used depreciatively in comparison to “erudite culture”. I first saw EX VOTOS on a little Chapel at Nazare’s Promontory, I was 10 years old. The Chapel was in it self an EX VOTO, it was full of thanks giving paintings for salvation from shipwrecks, sea storms and diseases of sailors and fishermen. At the time I wasn’t aware of the indelible mark they would live in me. My sub-conscience must have understood the connection between matter and transcendence, the fragility of existence, spirituality, being and soul. The oldest EX VOTO I ever saw was in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. Called Hercules tower it’s a gigantic lighthouse in granite, more than 200 feet high. It was built 1800 years ago and it’s still active. The construction was ordered by an architect, a roman citizen GAIO SEVIO LUPO, who lived in the city today called Coimbra, Portugal. GAIO had survived a shipwreck while sailing that coast. The materialisation of his promise in the shape of a lighthouse allowed the salvation of many others. The navigation routes in the ancient world are still unknown, but we know there were connections between places today part of Ireland, Portugal and Tunisia. The largest EX VOTO that I know is a huge convent in Mafra, Portugal. Its story was told by writer José Saramago in is book “Baltasar and Blimunda” witch in it self, I believe is also an EX VOTO. In the same way the Nobel José Saramago’s book is to me an EX VOTO. An EX VOTO to the thousands of anonymous and creative people sacrificed at the time the convent was built, who gave their work their suffering and their lives to make the convent’s construction possible but also through their memory to the millions of today's workers equally sacrificed. That’s how I’d like my EX VOTO project to be understood although in a very modest scale in comparison to the colossal dimension of José‘s work.

Papel recortado/Trimmed paper

All the papers they could find were kept: those from the parcels of something they had bought, from some delivery they might receive, the newspapers brought by some one arrived from the village… The very scarce white papers were particularly appreciated. They cut them with scissors. It was a task for the long days when nothing else could be done or for the long nights while waiting for the sleep to come. They folded and cut the paper rotating the scissors and the paper one at the time. In a zigzag they cut and cut an endless labyrinth curving on one way and another following a path known only by their imagination. Afterwards they shacked off the splints and by the tip of their fingers stretch the folded paper showing the drawing that appeared like embroidery or a frieze.
